We know that choosing a new gender-affirming care provider can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why we created this guide so you know what to expect.

This guide covers our standard membership. See our Lite membership page for details on that process.

1. Tell us about yourself

To get started, simply fill out a short questionnaire on our memberships page.

Your answers help us understand your needs so we can personalise your care.

2. Sign up to Anne

Joining Anne is quick and easy. First, you’ll be taken to a payment page to pay the £200 joining fee. Once you’ve paid the joining fee, we’ll email you an intake form to fill out whenever you’re ready.

3. Complete your intake form

The intake form asks for important details, so it helps to set aside time and have your documents ready. You’ll need to provide:

  • photo ID
  • proof of address
  • evidence of any existing prescriptions

We’ll also ask about your gender and medical history, as well as your emergency contact details. If you have questions, our friendly admin team is always here to help.

Once you submit your form, we’ll review it and get in touch if anything’s missing or unclear.

4. Set up your monthly subscription

When everything’s complete, we’ll confirm your membership and send you a link to set up your direct debit.

Once it’s active, your membership begins. You’ll receive a confirmation letter by email, and your first payment will be taken on your chosen date, followed by monthly payments after that.

5. Book your intake counselling session

Once you’re in the intake process, you can book your first counselling session.

We’ll match you with a counsellor who best fits your needs. After your first appointment, they’ll decide how many intake sessions are needed before you move forward.

All sessions take place online via video call, so it’s easy to fit them into your schedule.

6. Have a blood test

Everyone joining Anne needs an initial blood test. You can choose how to complete it:

  • Through your GP: we’ll share the test details, and you can send us the results
  • Through a partner clinic: we’ll send you a booking link for your nearest clinic (included in your membership)
  • At home: we can arrange a mobile phlebotomy service. This is included for under-18s and available for an additional fee for adults

Once your results are back, a clinician will review them and invite you to book your intake medical session.

7. Attend your intake medical session

Your first medical session is a chance to share your experiences and discuss medication options.

Afterwards, your clinician will create a treatment plan and, where appropriate, prescribe medication in line with your goals and international best-practice guidelines.

8. Arrange your prescription

Depending on the type of medication, you can either:

  • Collect it from your local pharmacy using a digital token, or
  • Have it delivered to your home.

Medication costs are not included in your membership fee, as they’re supplied externally. You may also need to purchase items such as needles or a sharps bin. We’ll guide you through that when the time comes.

9. Enjoy consistent, ongoing care

Once your intake process and prescription are complete, your regular care begins.

Regular check-ins

We’ll check in every three to four months to review your progress, renew prescriptions, and arrange any follow-up appointments or blood tests.

And you don’t have to wait for your next check-in; our team is always here if you have questions or need extra support at any time.

Blood tests

To keep your care safe and effective, we require a new blood test every three to four months. These tests help us see whether any adjustments are needed or if anything else is going on. Sometimes we’ll ask you to check in with a clinician after your test, but we can arrange this appointment at a time that works best for you.

Counselling sessions

After your initial intake therapeutic session, you can choose to have as much or as little counselling as you like. If you’d like extra counselling sessions, you’re welcome to book them at a reduced rate for members.

For those under 18, regular check-ins are a core part of your care. Once you turn 18, and you’ve been with us for a year or more, these sessions become optional.

Frequently Asked Questions

Or you can easily speak to us using one of the options below between 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday, or send us an email and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

  • Yes. All counselling and medical appointments happen online through video call, so you can attend from wherever you feel most comfortable.

  • If you need more mental health support during your time with us, we offer extra counselling sessions at a reduced rate.

Our counsellors are experienced in gender-affirming care and many have worked with trans+ people and their families for years. They’re here to support you, wherever you are in your journey.

  • There are a few ways to get your blood tests done, you can choose what works best for you. Blood tests can either be done with your GP, at one of our partner clinics or at your home with the mobile phlebotomy service.

    With your GP
If you choose to go through your GP, we will always provide full details to you and your GP.

At one of our partner clinics
If you’re over 18, you can choose one of our trusted partner clinics. We’ll refer you and send you the information to book an appointment when it suits you. This option is included in your membership.

At home with a mobile blood test service
If you’re under 18, you can have your blood test done at home with our mobile service, it’s completely free. Over 18s can also use this service, but there’s a small extra charge.

No matter which option you choose, we’ll guide you through it and make sure you have everything you need.

  • The cost to write your prescriptions is included in your membership. You’ll need to pay separately for the medication itself.

Prices vary based on what you’re prescribed, your dose, and where you get it filled.

  • Our care is based on informed consent, but there is still a process to follow.

All members go through our intake process, where we’ll work with you to make sure hormone therapy is the right next step and that you understand what it involves.

  • If you’re prescribed hormone therapy, we’ll send you a digital prescription you can take to a local pharmacy. If you’re over 18, we can also connect you with a UK pharmacy that delivers to your home.

If you’re under 18 and accessing puberty blockers through our legal route, we’ll give you all the information you need to order, pay for, and administer the medication safely.

  • It can take up to 12 weeks to complete the intake process. However, this varies depending on your individual circumstances, such as the number of counselling sessions required, your availability for appointments and your blood test preference.

Joining Anne starts with an intake process that typically takes up to 12 weeks. The exact timeline depends on your situation, like how many therapy sessions you need, your schedule, and how you’d prefer to do your blood tests.

For more detailed information, see our guide to joining Anne.

  • Yes. We can write surgery referral letters for both members and non-members. But it’s important to know that each surgical provider has their own rules, so we can’t guarantee they’ll accept our letters.

Once you’ve chosen a surgeon, you can ask them directly if they accept referrals from Anne Health. If needed, we’re happy to reach out to them ourselves to explain who we are and how we work.

  • Yes. If you’re under 18, we need consent from at least one parent or legal guardian before we can welcome you to Anne Health. We’ll also need that parent or guardian to join some of your appointments if asked. This helps us make sure you’re supported and safe throughout your care.

  • Membership is for 12 months at a time.

  • Not unless you want us to. As a private provider, we won’t contact your GP unless you give us permission. However, if you’d like us to communicate with your GP, and keep them informed of all relevant updates relating to your care with us, we’re happy to do so.

  • Yes, in many cases. If you live outside the UK and want to join Anne, we’d love to hear from you. There may be some differences in how your care is delivered, so we recommend speaking to our friendly admin team before signing up.

  • No, you don’t. You don’t need a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria to access our services. We use an informed consent model, which centres your understanding of yourself and your care choices.

  • We’ve successfully referred patients to the following surgeons:

    • Dr Ioannis Ntanos
    • Mr Miles Berry
    • Dr El Gammal
    • Miss Chloe Wright
    • Dr Kate Williams
    • Mr Robert Morris

If you’re interested in working with someone not listed here, please contact them to check if they’ll accept a referral from us. We’re happy to reach out and have that conversation with them on your behalf.

  • We’re happy to contact your GP to request shared-care, but it depends on whether they agree. We can’t guarantee they will, however, as every GP practice is different.

  • Sometimes, yes, but it depends on what the diagnosis is for.

If you need a formal diagnosis for something specific (like a gender recognition certificate), talk to us and we’ll let you know if we can help. If not, we can refer you to someone who can.

  • When a payment is missed, we will send you an email notifying you of this. The email will include a link to update your payment method.

If you’re experiencing financial difficulties, please reach out to discuss this with us. We’ll always do what we can to help.

  • Yes. All children and young people go through our intake process. Even if your child has been assessed as Gillick competent elsewhere, we still need to confirm their understanding of the care they’re asking for. That includes the risks and benefits involved.

That said, we do our best to keep this as simple as possible for families transferring from other providers. Usually, young people new to Anne Health need at least three sessions with a therapist before moving on to a doctor. If you’re transferring from another provider, two sessions may be enough, unless we think more are needed for safety or support.

We also offer regular follow-up sessions as part of your care. These are more like check-ins than traditional therapy, and are designed to make sure you feel supported throughout your time with us.

  • We’ve secured a legal route that allows us to continue offering puberty blockers. If this is something you’re exploring, we’ll explain everything clearly during the intake process, including how it works and what your options are.

  • We raise money year-round to provide free and subsidised gender-affirming care for those who cannot otherwise afford it.

Visit our Crowdfunder for full details and to make a donation. You can also make a one-off donation via our website.

Every donation helps us reach more people who need support.

  • We offer free and subsidised places thanks to donations from our community. These spots are limited, but we’ll announce whenever new applications open. You can also follow us on social media for updates.

Keep an eye on our fundraising for the latest updates on when new funding rounds will open.

  • No. At Anne Health, we use an informed consent model. That means you don’t need to socially transition before starting hormone therapy.

Everyone’s journey looks different, and we’re here to support you in a way that works for you.

  • We work with clinicians based across the UK and the EU.

For prescriptions, young people are matched with EU-based prescribers. Over-18s may be matched with EU or UK prescribers.

  • Please let us know right away. If your pharmacy won’t accept your prescription, we can issue you a new one and help you find a different pharmacy. We also keep a database of pharmacies that have been trans-friendly and supportive in the past.

We can also provide guidance for UK pharmacies on accepting digital prescriptions.

  • This is a common concern, and one we take seriously. Our clinicians follow guidance from the Endocrine Society and WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health), which focuses on development stage rather than age alone. This helps to avoid the potential impact on bone health from a prolonged period without hormones.

We’ll work closely with you and your child to reduce any risks. As part of your membership, you’ll have access to a trusted endocrinologist who has lots of experience supporting young people exploring their gender.
